The Protein Ball Co win all the prizes for their fun packaging. We first saw their little bags on the shelves in an independent supermarket in Bristol and immediately wanted to try them! After sitting down to write this review, we also visited their website and just loved the design with those little ball characters coming to life through their eyes! Very cute.
Anyway, enough of that, how did they taste? The Protein Ball Co hand roll (yes really) every single little energy ball and they come in 45g bags with 6 in each. There are eight flavours to choose from including some more unusual combinations like ‘lemon and pistachio’ and ‘raspberry brownie’.
We tried three flavours:
- Coconut & Macadamia
- Peanut Butter
- Goji & Coconut.
The thing which we liked most about this brand over some of the others we’ve tried is that it’s pitched very much as a healthy, protein-rich snack and not a post-gym or workout boost. The balls are made with ingredients you can get at home and because they’re hand-rolled, they have a rustic, home-baked feel to them which makes you feel like you’re eating a little biscuit rather than a health food product.
The balls are quite small in size but really fill you up. With an average of 8g of protein across the 8 flavours, and a choice of plant, whey and egg protein for different diets, these balls really are a great option for staving off the hunger without losing out on taste.
How did they taste?
The Goji & Coconut balls were the clear winner for us. Rich and full of berry notes they were totally delicious. This one is vegan, made up of raw pitted dates, cashews, goji berries, desiccated coconut, and plant proteins from organic pea and brown rice. For a decadent finish (and probably why we loved them so much), these ones are also rolled in cacoa powder. Naughty but nice!
The Peanut Butter balls were also tasty although much like other peanut butter flavoured energy balls we’ve tasted along the way. It’s a great, classic flavour combo but didn’t offer anything particularly different.
We enjoyed the Coconut & Macadamia flavour too, and with 10g of protein and high in fibre, they were the most filling. Six of these small balls are more than enough to see you through to lunchtime or get you past that 3 o’clock slump.
Overall, we have nothing but great things to say about The Protein Ball Co. Not only are their products delicious and healthy, this business is an inspiration. It started in the kitchen of husband and wife team Matt and Hayley Hunt in 2015 and now, just three years later, their products are available in 12 countries and they’ve hand rolled over 1 million balls! Incredible!
